Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City

Thursday starts with an early wake up call and drive to the airport at Hue to get the 8.50 am flight to Saigon. On arrival, Saigon appears much more modern that Hanoi or Hue, it is obviously much larger but the centre seems more spacious. As we drive out of the actual centre towards out hotel in district 5, we are back to narrow streets with street vendors taking up the paths forcing you into the road with the rest of the wheeled traffic.

Today we visited the War Remnants Museum following the events of the Vietnam War (or American War as it is called here). this was very educational, and gives a real insight to the war from the side of the Vietnamese. The museum is divided into different sections, but the war crimes section is the most disturbing to see. It shows pictures of the most hideous crimes against men, women and children and is very graphic. I was not able to take many photos as I was genuinely moved to tears with the images and it was difficult to even look at them and the stories, let alone start clicking the camera. I am sure others that have been there will agree, the harrowing pictures are very distressing, I am not sure I will ever get them out my head but it certainly brings home how fortunate we are to never have witnessed such things.

There was also an old prison on this site and the museum here showed how prisoners were treated and tortured. Again, very explicit and moving.

Many of the group did not participate, those that did ended up in tears. Although these images will probably never leave my head now, it is a real eye opener and an important part of the history of this country. You have to hand it to them, it was not that long ago really and they have done wonders to get themselves into a better place now. Of places to visit in Vietnam, this is an absolute must.

The rest of the day was spent touring the city seeing the outside of the Reunification palace, Notre Dame Cathedral and the Post Office and lunch on the roof top terrace of the Rex hotel, famed for being where the news was broadcasted, being the news that the government wanted you to hear of course. The temperature here is in the mid 30's, about 10 degree higher than Hanoi and Hue....it's hot and very humid!

Tonight someone has recommended a Vietnamese restaurant.

Tomorrow, the Chu Chi Tunnels!
